Perfecting The Atmosphere In Your Garage

Written by Garth

What in the world are we talking about? Well for starters, the air temperature in your garage. That along with humidity levels can wreak havoc on everything in your garage and your garage door. Mother nature is a mean mistress with no mercy or prejudice. This is why it is important to maintain a secured airflow in your garage. You don’t want it getting too hot, too cold or too humid.
The best way to do this is to insulate your garage properly, including your garage door. This probably sounds way more difficult than it is.
Let’s talk about how airflow and air pressure works in your garage. When your garage door is open, the air pressure is equal to the outside air pressure. When you close your garage up, it becomes greater, if your garage is sealed up tight. If not, it can become less, drawing in the outside humidity and temperature. People who have ventilation in their garage that pushes air into it are actually very lucky. This gently pushes air out of their garage rather than drawing it in.

First, Your Garage Door

The most important aspect of insulating your garage from the outside world is securing your garage door. Let’s face it, it is your first and last line of defense. Old windows in your garage can cause minor setbacks but if your garage door has a huge hole in it, then it is the problem. A paper-thin garage door can also be a big problem. For one, it is more likely to rust at a quicker pace. Secondly, it is not a good blocker for the outside temperature.
Once you have gotten past all of that, it is a matter of sealing all holes and cracks. When your garage door is fully sealed with weather strips, insulation, rubber gaskets and the whole nine yards, it is a done deal. Then you have to move onto windows if you have them in your garage door. These should be sealed in a similar fashion. Finally, you have side-doors that go outside your home. You want to replace older doors if need be and always make sure they have proper weather stripping. If you can feel the wind in your closed garage on a windy or stormy day, then something is not right. Go back and check it all again.
