3 Safety Tips to Avoid Garage Door Accidents!

Written by Garth

Did you know that as your garage door parts can start to wear and fail after 6-8 years of service? This can cause serious injury or even death if you are in the garage when it happens. One family was lucky not to be in the garage when the entire door came crashing down. The damage is almost as bad if your roof were to have collapsed. That is why garage door maintenance is so important!
When this happens, it is time to call an emergency garage door service to come and repair any damage and put your garage door back onto its tracks. This can be caused by a number of things, but in the case above, the eight year old garage door’s springs had given out. This may be different in your garage door, which is why a garage door service technician is your best choice for determining what went wrong.

Garage Door - Fixing Garage DoorThere May Not Be A Warning…

Unfortunately, garage door manufacturers do not give homeowners any warnings for what can happen, which leaves many unaware of the dangers they can cause. After just 5 years, your garage door springs can become worn and give out, which, as we mentioned above, can cause severe damage to your home or even you and your family. It is important to remember to have your garage door springs replaced every 5 to 6 years, to avoid an accident. You do not want to wait until a serious accident occurs to replace your garage door parts or even just have them serviced.
Thankfully, it is not hard to stay aware of your garage door needs. As long as you pay attention, you can prevent injury and damage while protecting your family, too! Let’s go over some helpful tips to prevent any problems with your garage door.

Check for Protection

Does your garage door have what it needs in terms of protection that will prevent personal or property damage? Take a look at your garage door, carefully, and see if the springs are enclosed with a metal tube, or if they use a safety containment cable. Some garage doors may have both of these features. There are a few ways to determine what your garage door uses.
If your garage door is a Clopay extension sprung door, it will have an exclusive patented safety containment cable that will stop a spring from snapping and flying loose, which could cause damage or injury. The spring on Clopay torsion sprung doors the spring will be installed around the torsion shaft, which ensures that if a spring does break, it will be unable to snap free and cause damage or injury. If you are unsure, you can always call a garage door technician to check out your door and see that it is functioning properly. Garage Door - Garage Door Safety

Loose Bottom Brackets?

The bottom brackets on your garage door are under heavy tension and will cause serious injury or damage if they are accidentally or deliberately loosened, or if they are removed by anyone other than an experienced garage door installer or maintenance staff. If you have a Clopay garage residential steel doors feature patented Safety-T Brackets which, in a normal circumstance, cannot be removed when a door is under tension, which lowers the risk significantly of any serious injury.

Check Your Garage Door Spring

Be mindful of older springs, and remember that the springs on garage doors are very tightly wound and under high tension, this is what makes them a high source for accidents, unfortunately. We all know that all things eventually meet the end of their lifespan, and that goes for garage door springs as well. The springs will eventually wear, and break, just like in the example above. No matter what springs you are using, even the high quality steel that Clopay uses.
If your garage door is older, than to be safe, you should call a professional installer to take a look and see if any parts need replaced. If your garage door has more than one spring, be sure to have both replaced, even if one is not broken. This is because it will prevent any damage to the second spring, and will keep your garage door working properly.
